Noguchi Coffee Table: Blend of Materials Used To Create
66Origin
The Noguchi table was based on the design style of sculptor, architect, landscape and furniture designer Isamu Noguchi (1904 -1988). Mr. Noguchi was Japanese and American background and made his career from sculpture and public artwork. In 1947, he teamed up with Herman Miller Furniture Company and collaborated with other artists to design a furniture catalogue, which used design principals from modern art pieces of that time period. The piece was considered one of the most important works of modern furniture.
The Noguchi Coffee Table Design Story
The Noguchi table gained considerable attention during its unveiling because Mr. Noguchi designed it, however it became famous for its unique and simplistic design. According to Mr. Noguchi, the design of the table was “borrowed” from an artist who had “borrowed” the idea from him. Mr. Noguchi goes on to explain that upon a visit to Hawaii to take part in an advertisement, he was asked by furniture designer Robsjohn-Gibbings to present a design for three-legged coffee table. A replica of the design presented was later published in an advertisement by Robsjohn-Gibbings. After seeing this table in an advertisement, Mr. Noguchi decided to redesign a three-legged table variant of his own and came up with the “Noguchi Coffee Table” we see today.
Noguchi Art/Furniture Piece
The Design
The furniture piece was originally included in the 1947 catalogue of Herman Miller furniture and since then has built a reputation as both furniture and sculpture. It is designed with an organic feel of nature sculpture in mind, but with function. The idea is for the furniture to blend into the space it occupies. It has three legs with the legs being held together by a pin. The surface of the table is an irregular shaped piece of glass, which complements the unique shape of the base.
Choosing Your Noguchi Table
The Noguchi piece is an elegant piece of furniture that should have no trouble fitting in the décor of most rooms, however it is important to choose the right color or finish. The table comes in a few different styles, which you can use to accent your entertainment space with. Consider choosing a neutral finish or color, which will easily blend into a variety of different decors. The style choices include, Natural Cherry Base, Noguchi Black Base and Walnut Base.
